On Monday, September 16, 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) made significant strides in cracking down on the suspects involved in the Sh72 million heist from an ATM in Nairobi. The arrests bring the total number of suspects to nine, with six already arraigned in court and granted Sh1 million bond.

According to reports, Mr. John Kamau Mulei, a suspect in the heist, was arrested at Muumandu village in Machakos County. He led the detectives to the house of his 60-year-old grandmother, Mary Kyalo, where Sh2,389,000 was recovered.

Further investigations revealed that the suspects are related to one of the six suspects already arrested, Mr. Kamau being the brother of Bernard Mwendwa, a G4S officer. The police also recovered another Sh1 million from a cowshed in Lurambi, Kakamega County, after suspect Bernard Sewanga, an employee of G4S, was arrested at his newly rented house in Ruiru, Kiambu County.

Mr. Sewanga led the detectives to the homestead of his father-in-law, where the cash was found hidden in a black bag and buried in the cowshed. The arrests are a significant milestone in the investigation into the Standard Chartered Bank ATM Heist in Nairobi West on Thursday, September 5, 2019.
