On September 16, 2019, DCI officers made a significant breakthrough in their investigation into the theft of KSh 72 million from ATMs in Nairobi. The officers recovered KSh 1 million from a cowshed in Lurambi, Kakamega County, after a suspect was arrested and led them to the hidden cash.
The suspect, Bernard Sewanga, a G4S employee, had been hiding in Ruiru, where he was eventually arrested. After his arrest, he led the officers to the cowshed in Lurambi, where the money was found.
According to the DCI, the money was hidden in a cowshed after being placed in a sack. The officers said that the money was likely part of the KSh 72 million stolen from ATMs in Nairobi.
This recovery brings the total amount of stolen money recovered to KSh 8 million, following the arrest of two other suspects who had KSh 7 million in their possession two weeks ago.
