On September 16, 2019, Men's Health spoke with Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin about his city's public health priorities.

After serving in the U.S. Navy Reserve, including a 2010 deployment to Afghanistan, Bronin worked with the Connecticut state governor to implement policies aiding homeless veterans. A singer/songwriter and father of three, Bronin was elected mayor in 2016.

According to Bronin, the most pressing public health issue in Hartford is the long-term effects of trauma in communities exposed to gun violence. He emphasized the need for emotional and behavioral support for young people affected by gun violence.

For Bronin, a healthy city is one that prioritizes mental and emotional wellbeing, in addition to physical health. He aims to be a calm and steady leader, responding to frustration and anger with empathy and honesty.

When asked about his favorite exercise, Bronin mentioned hiking with his kids, a rare but cherished activity. His go-to healthy snack is Kind bars, although he acknowledges they may not be as healthy as he thinks. To work out, Bronin listens to The Rising by Bruce Springsteen.
