On September 16, 2019, a press conference was held in which Hanifa Were detailed her relationship with Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip.

According to Hanifa, the senator made passes at her via messenger and later invited her to his house in Nairobi. She reportedly stayed at the senator's house for a while before he dodged her and she decided to return to Mombasa.

However, Hanifa claimed that she never heard from the senator again and when she tried to reach out to him, he reportedly threatened her life. Police have since launched investigations into the matter.

Senator Loitiptip has denied the allegations, stating that he and Hanifa were only in a relationship for a week. He claims that it has been six months since they separated and that Hanifa has been trying to force love and destroy his young family with Saumu Mbuvi.
