On Sunday, 15 September 2019, Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati was spotted with a motorcade of over 30 vehicles in Maliki and Mulukyuni markets of Tongareni constituency in Bungoma North, attending church services.

Following the church services, the governor held rallies where he instructed residents to queue up. Those who did were given Ksh. 50 and asked to support him in the next election.

However, the move has angered the residents of Tongareni, who have been complaining of a lack of development projects in the county since Wangamati's election in 2017.

Wakoli Kunani, the leader of the Western Youth Council, has called on the governor to stop 'playing around with the lives of residents' and instead use devolved funds to improve the county's infrastructure.

Some residents who received the Ksh. 50 have also criticized the governor, stating that the amount is insufficient to help them.
