On June 4, 2018, Nairobi County Bursary funds worth Sh.297 million were mistakenly deposited into an offshore account held by Maryland University in Australia.
The discovery was made by Minority Whip Peter Imwatok, who raised concerns about the handling of the funds.
“People took the money and deposited it in Maryland’s account for over a month before the money came. So we want to know who sent the money there and for what, and who returned the money on June 4,” Imwatok asked.
According to Imwatok, the Australian University had opened the account for funds meant for the establishment of Dandora Primary School.
House Education Committee chair, Millicent Mugadi, admitted to the mistake and assured that paybacks were being processed.
“The bank received the money on Monday and is currently printing 10,000 cheques daily and by the end of this week, all the cheques will be ready,” she told the house.
However, Umoja II Ward MCA Joseph Ndonji dismissed Mugadi’s claims, questioning how the same staff who had been working at City Hall for the past five years could make such mistakes.
