On September 16, 2019, a tragic incident occurred in Kakamega, where a 14-year-old boy's life took a devastating turn after losing a name-calling contest, known as mchongoano.
Mchongoano is a game of wit, where the most foul-mouthed competitor wins, but its consequences can be severe. In this case, the 14-year-old boy's ego and self-esteem were severely bruised after he lost the contest.
According to reports, the boy accused his friend of making him a laughing stock among their mates, leading to a heated argument. The situation escalated, and the two got into a fight. In a shocking turn of events, the 14-year-old boy hit his opponent with a stone on the head, leaving him unconscious.
The victim regained consciousness but remained in a half-coma state for a few minutes. Two days later, he developed complications and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The 14-year-old suspect and another friend who witnessed the ordeal were arrested and detained awaiting completion of police investigations.
