On September 16, 2019, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) cleared McDonald Mariga to vie in the upcoming Kibra by-election on a Jubilee Party ticket.
Mariga, addressing the press outside the IEBC headquarters in Nairobi, expressed confidence in clinching the seat, saying, 'The people of Kibra will decide who becomes their Member of Parliament. They will be my bosses and I know everything will go well on November 7, 2019.'
Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen lauded the IEBC for giving Mariga the green light, saying 'justice has been done.'
Former Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale and Lang'ata MP Nixon Korir dismissed recent speculations about Mariga's real age, stating that the only things that matter are that he is over 18 years of age and is hence eligible to vote, and is also eligible to contest for any seat by the virtue of being over 21 years in accordance with the law.
