Antony Mukuru Waweru, a 40-year-old welder turned entrepreneur, has been on a remarkable journey. After five years of working in the informal sector as a welder and metal fabricator, he decided to pursue a new dream – becoming a heavy commercial haulage driver. However, this dream didn't materialize, and he eventually turned to repairing bicycles, a business he started with Sh300.
With the growth of the boda boda business, Waweru had to adapt and increase his skillset to remain relevant. He has been doing mechanical repair works for 15 years now, but on the side, he farms to increase his earnings. His farm produces a variety of vegetables, as well as livestock like pigs, rabbits, sheep, and poultry.
Waweru's main source of income comes from his repairs business, which is highly competitive. He faces challenges, including dealing with county council officials who frequently confiscate his trade tools. In a good day, he makes Sh1,000, while on slow days, he takes home as little as Sh300.
