On a recent weekend, the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) made a significant move in the fight against counterfeit goods in Mombasa. The authority destroyed an assortment of counterfeit items worth Sh5 million at the Coast Clay Works in Changamwe, Mombasa County.

The items destroyed included fast-moving goods such as footwear, clothing, electronic goods like circuit breakers, cosmetics, and stationery, which were replicas of popular local and international brands.

ACA Chair, Ms Flora Mutahi, emphasized that the destruction of the counterfeit goods was a clear violation of the Anti-Counterfeit Act 2008. She noted that the authority had taken time out of its busy schedule to oversee the destruction of the counterfeited goods.

Mutahi expressed confidence that the series of high-profile seizures being carried out by ACA would plant the seed of fear and uncertainty in the hearts and minds of counterfeiters.

She also appealed to stakeholders, particularly brand owners, to share knowledge, offer assistance, and collaborate with enforcement agencies to achieve an environmentally friendly disposal and destruction operation.

Furthermore, Mutahi emphasized that ACA wants to send a strong message that Kenya has both legal and institutional frameworks to fight counterfeits, creating a conducive investment environment.

She added that with increased investment, Kenya will have a more vibrant and strong growing economy, employment, and development.
