On September 16, 2019, a proposal to limit harambee donations to Sh100,000 was tabled in parliament, sparking debate on the practice of politicians donating millions to churches.

Leading the charge is Minority Leader John Mbadi, who argues that public officers should declare the source of their funds if they donate more than Sh100,000 in a harambee.

According to the proposed amendment, any public officer who contributes an amount exceeding Sh100,000 to a public collection or harambee shall file a return with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) stating the source of the funds within 14 days of such contribution.

The amendment also seeks to empower the EACC to give it more efficiency in dealing with graft and bestow upon it the power to prosecute and institute criminal investigations against corrupt individuals.

DP William Ruto has been criticized for his practice of dishing out millions in donations to churches and other institutions, which has put him under fire from his critics.
