On September 13, 2019, a multi-agency operation was conducted in Wote town, Makueni County, resulting in the arrest of six Tanzanian nationals who had been begging in the streets.
According to Makueni Police Commander Joseph Ole Naipeiyan, the six individuals were brought to Kenya by unknown persons and were being operated by a group that would drop them at certain points in the town in the wee hours of the morning and collect them at night.
During the operation, police found that some of the individuals were not disabled, but were instead attempting to swindle money from unsuspecting Kenyans.
After a weekend-long questioning, police established that the six individuals were brought to Kenya to beg, prompting authorities to deport them.
The six individuals include one man and five women.
