Kenyan Members of Parliament (MPs) are pushing for a range of luxury upgrades, including five-star catering, top-of-the-range cars, and a face-lift for their offices.
According to a report tabled by Nyaribari Masaba MP Ezekiel Machogu, the current Sh5 million car grants and Sh20 million mortgages are 'grossly inadequate'.
MPs are also complaining about the increased number of visitors to Parliament, which they claim is making it difficult for them to share common areas like lifts, Internet, toilets, and lounges 'with all and sundry'.
They are demanding to be served tea by five-star catering staff, supervised by a public health specialist, and to have access to a revamped gym with blind masseurs.
MPs also want a bar with continental and traditional cuisines, and top-of-the-range 4WD cars bought by taxpayers.
On August 10, 2018, Machogu's committee concluded that the current car grants and mortgages were not sufficient to purchase a decent four-wheel-drive vehicle for use by MPs, given the terrain most members have to cover.
