On September 12, 2019, President Kenyatta chaired a special Cabinet meeting at State House, Nairobi, where a ban on the adoption of Kenyan children by foreign nationals was announced.
The move comes after a local TV station aired an expose on deplorable conditions at children's orphanages operated by the Child Welfare Society of Kenya (CWSK), a State corporation that oversees the adoption of children in the country.
President Kenyatta, who is the society's patron, directed the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection to formulate a new policy document regulating child adoption in Kenya and to streamline operations of children's homes.
The Child Welfare Society of Kenya, which carries out its programs across the 47 counties in the country, has been involved in child adoptions since 1969, placing over 8,000 children into legal adoption.
According to a statement on the CWSK website, the ban takes effect immediately.
