Chelsea manager Frank Lampard's decision to give young players a chance this season has paid off in a big way, as his team defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 5-2 at Molineux on September 14, 2019.
Tammy Abraham was the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick and becoming the third player under 22 to score two goals in three successive Premier League games, matching the achievement of Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United and Tottenham's Dele Alli.
Abraham's treble was supported by two other graduates from the Chelsea academy, centre-back Fikayo Tomori and midfielder Mason Mount. Tomori opened the scoring with a stunning 30-yard strike, his first for the club, while Mount scored the added-time fifth.
Wolves conjured a response in the 69th minute when Romain Saiss headed a Joao Moutinho corner goalwards, but by that point, Chelsea had established a four-goal lead.
Chelsea's young guns, including Abraham, Tomori, and Mount, have been given a chance to shine this season due to a two-window transfer embargo. The move has clearly paid off, with the team providing further vindication for Lampard's decision.
Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo, on the other hand, will be concerned by the defeat, particularly ahead of the start of the Europa League group stage.
