As I look back on my childhood, I am reminded of the strong influence of my parents' faith in Seventh Day Adventism. Born and raised in South Nyanza, I was immersed in the teachings of this Christian sect, which originated in the United States. Every Saturday, I would accompany my family to the SDA church at Manyatta School, near the market centre of Awendo.

However, my experience with SDA was not unique to my family. In fact, it was a widespread phenomenon in South Nyanza, where many people had adopted the teachings of this American-based religion. As a result, I grew up believing in the concept of heavenly salvation, which was central to the SDA teachings.

But as I grew older, my views on religion began to change. I started to question the teachings of SDA and other religious movements, and I eventually lost my faith. Despite this, I still maintain a sense of respect for my family's beliefs, as all my living siblings remain devoted SDA adherents.

My experience with SDA has led me to reflect on the nature of religion and its impact on individuals and society. I have come to realize that kindness and goodness towards others should be the core teachings of any genuine religious movement. Unfortunately, the promise of reward in the afterlife often motivates people to be good, rather than doing good for its own sake.

As I see it, human goodness should not be driven by the desire for reward or punishment. Instead, it should be a natural response to the needs of others. In my opinion, this is the true essence of kindness and compassion, and it is something that should be valued and nurtured in all aspects of life.
