On September 14, 2019, Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe was laid to rest, but not before a funeral ceremony at the National Stadium in Harare, attended by 11 Heads of State, including Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Among the dignitaries were eight former Presidents, including Ghana's Jerry Rawlings, who paid their respects to the late leader.

Security was tight at the stadium, with State pall bearers carrying Mugabe's casket draped in the country's flag to a tent at the centre of the stadium.

Government leaders from Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, South Africa, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, Rwanda, and other African countries sat at the dais, including Uhuru Kenyatta, Yemi Osinbajo, Cyril Ramaphosa, and Teodoro Obiang.

However, there was confusion over Mugabe's final resting place, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa stating that the government needed to build a mausoleum at Heroes Acre in Harare, which would take 30 days to complete.

According to Mnangagwa, Mugabe's body would be preserved and returned to Zvimba before being buried at the mausoleum.

Despite the uncertainty, the funeral ceremony went ahead, with Mugabe's family members, including his former First Lady, in attendance.
