Published on September 14, 2019, Zimbabweans gathered to mourn the death of former President Robert Mugabe, a complex figure whose legacy continues to be felt across the continent.
As African heads of state, including long-ruling leaders from Equatorial Guinea and DR Congo, arrived in Zimbabwe for Mugabe's funeral, the country's ruling ZANU-PF party sought to honor his memory by burying him at a national monument to heroes of the liberation war against white minority rule.
However, some relatives expressed bitterness at the way former comrades had ousted Mugabe, pushing for him to be buried in his home village instead.
