On September 14, 2019, a mix-up on Twitter led to BBC Africa journalist Ciru Muriuki being targeted by Kenyans online for a post written by author Ciku Muiruri.

While Ciku Muiruri was accused of using the death of Dutch businessman Tob Cohen to promote her book, Ciru Muriuki found herself at the receiving end of the backlash.

"I am not @MissCiku. I haven’t written a book. I never hosted a show named Busted. And I haven’t tweeted anything about dogs. Aki please I was just doing my juice cleanse in peace," tweeted Ciru Muriuki in response to the mix-up.

Some Twitter users expressed their frustration and amusement at the situation, with one user suggesting that Ciru Muriuki should change her handle to avoid future confusion.

"I have allowed you to use my 2nd name to avoid this confusion," tweeted @SabakachiMike, who shared a similar name with Ciku Muiruri.
