On September 12, 2019, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Daniel Manduku announced that the authority would hand over the management of Shimoni port to Kwale County government.
During a consultative meeting in Kwale, Manduku informed Governor Salim Mvurya and his deputy Fatuma Achani that the port's operation would be transferred to the county's management.
“We shall hand over almost the entire operation of the port to the management of Kwale County government. What will remain with us is the very technical part of it. We will sign an agreement with Kwale County,” said Dr Manduku.
Governor Mvurya welcomed the move, describing it as unique, and pledged his administration's support. He urged KPA to facilitate a capacity-building program for the county administration to effectively manage the port.
