Published on September 13, 2019, Faith Chepngetich Kipyegon, the world 1500m champion, and Timothy Cheruiyot, the Diamond League series champion, excelled in the women's and men's 1500m trials at Nyayo Stadium.
Cheruiyot, in sensational form this season, won the men's 1500m with a time of 3:34.91, followed by Ronald Kwemoi in 3:36.61 and George Manangoi in 3:37.00, securing a spot for the World Championships in Doha.
World champion Elijah Manangoi opted out of the trials but secured a wild card to defend his title.
Cheruiyot expressed his readiness to team up with his colleagues to sweep the podium in Doha.
“In 2017 I won silver and I think going to Doha I can improve on that. The team is really strong and it will be competitive there as well,” said Cheruiyot.
Kipyegon, who had been on maternity leave, was elated to be back on track and expressed her determination to defend her title in Doha.
“It feels good to defend my title in Doha. We are going to work as a team and if we bring all three medals it will be even better. I know it won’t be easy especially as we will be facing the likes of Dibaba,” said Kipyegon.
