On Friday, September 13, 2019, Makueni County Commissioner Maalim Mohammed set ablaze 60 impounded gambling machines in Wote town, marking a significant crackdown on the illicit trade.

Speaking at the scene, Mohammed emphasized that the government would not tolerate gambling, citing its negative impact on families and the involvement of school-going children in the business.

‘This is spoiling our children and there are no benefits for those who gamble. You traders, there are many legal businesses you can do. We have taken a stand as national government administration that you forget about this business. You cannot fight a war you cannot win. The best is to surrender,’ warned Mohammed.

Residents of Wote, including Ms. Justina Muveva, echoed Mohammed's sentiments, calling for the elimination of the illegal trade, which they claimed had led to children dropping out of school and men abandoning their responsibilities.
