On September 13, 2019, Luminate, a global philanthropic organisation, announced a $1m (Sh103 million) investment in the Baraza Media Lab, a new initiative aimed at strengthening the capacity of Kenyan journalists and publishers to report in the public interest.
The Baraza Media Lab, run in partnership with Mett?, an innovation and entrepreneur’s hub, will provide a dedicated physical space for Kenyan journalists, publishers, and media entrepreneurs to collaborate, network, and develop their skills.
According to Ory Okolloh, Managing Director at Luminate, the Baraza Media Lab will be an important anchor for journalists and entrepreneurs alike, providing an enabling environment for independent media to thrive and supporting collaboration and innovation within the media industry.
The launch of the Baraza Media Lab comes at a time when Kenyan media faces several challenges, including a lack of innovation among media organisations, skills gaps among media practitioners, weak networking between media and aligned sectors, and downsizing at major media houses, as highlighted in a 2018 research report by Reboot.
