On Thursday evening, a newborn baby was found in a pit latrine in Kimunye village, Gichugu, Kirinyaga, sparking shock and concern among residents.

The baby was discovered behind Kimunye Shopping Centre, and it is suspected that the infant was thrown into the latrine by someone who is not a resident of the area.

Residents claimed that they did not know any woman who had been pregnant in the last nine months, suggesting that the baby's mother may not be from the local community.

Police officers were called in and managed to save the baby, who was taken to ACK Kabare dispensary for first aid and then to Kerugoya hospital for further treatment.

Gichugu OCPD Anthony Wanjuu Mbogo stated that police are looking for the mother.

According to resident Pauline Njeri, 'Residents who were passing by thought it was a kitty cat.'

Resident Jackline Wanjiru informed police officers based at Kimunye police post, who then responded to the situation.
