Published on September 13, 2019, the Kenyan government has announced plans to cut its spending to bring down the budget gap.

The Treasury targets to reduce its budget deficit to 3.5% by 2023, a significant improvement from the 6.7% deficit in 2018 and 7.8% in 2017.

According to Ukur Yatani, the Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury, the cuts will be 'brutal and sustained', with a focus on reducing spending on overseas trips and government advertising.

Mr. Yattani emphasized the importance of proper use of state resources, including limiting the use of state vehicles and the number of government delegates in international meetings.

He also highlighted the need to focus finances on existing projects nearing completion, rather than starting new ones, to ensure citizens benefit from public investments.
