Published on September 13, 2019, Jumia has introduced a new initiative to empower young entrepreneurs in Kenya.

The online shop, which has grown from a small and medium enterprise (SME) itself, has started holding masterclasses to share its knowledge and experience with upcoming entrepreneurs.

According to Charles Njuguna, a Jumia staff member, the masterclasses aim to teach entrepreneurs about the particulars of growing their businesses, including the mistakes Jumia made during its own growth phase.

"We want to give back to the ecosystem and help SMEs grow," said Pauline Masese, head of communications at Jumia. "We'll be taking suggestions from the trainees to get an idea of what we will teach about in the next session."

The first masterclass, held on Thursday, focused on growth hacking, a topic that Jumia staff believed was relevant to the current business environment.

"We will be working on the feedback we get to know what people are interested in," Njuguna said. "For the first masterclass, we thought it was relevant to teach about growth hacking because the World is getting into that."

The next masterclass is scheduled for October.
