On September 11, 2019, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru sparked controversy by stating that Kenyans should ensure they don't elect a Kikuyu or Kalenjin president in the 2022 elections.

Waiguru argued that a Kikuyu presidency would fuel feelings of exclusion from the country's top leadership by other communities, adding that Kenya has many communities and one or two cannot continue dominating the leadership.

Deputy President William Ruto, however, took issue with Waiguru's comments, saying that Jubilee supported and voted for President Uhuru Kenyatta to succeed former President Mwai Kibaki not because of ethnicity but because of his competence.

Responding to Waiguru on his Twitter handle, Ruto said, 'He is not a leader of any ethnic community but that of Jubilee, the largest political party with MCA's, MPs and governors in 41 of 47 counties and President of Kenya. 'Muwache kasumba ya ukabila' (Stop promoting tribalism).
