On September 13, 2019, 15 lions escaped from Solio conservancy in Kieni, Nyeri County, sparking a search operation by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers.
According to KWS Assistant Director Simon Gitau, the lions disappeared from the conservancy and were last seen roaming at night, returning to their enclosure during the day.
Gitau attributed the escape to holes dug by warthogs along the conservancy's electric fence, which the lions exploited to flee.
Residents have been advised to be cautious and report any lion sightings to KWS, as the rangers continue their pursuit of the escaped animals.
Despite the escape, Gitau assured that no attacks had been reported, and the KWS was working to prevent further escapes by redoing the fence.
