The Kenya Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has strongly opposed a new requirement by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for principals to have Master's degrees.

According to Kuppet Secretary General Akelo Misori, the requirement is punitive and discriminatory to teachers, particularly those in rural areas.

"We demand that the condition for Master's degree be withdrawn," said Mr. Misori.

He added that not everyone who has a Master's degree has the capacity to become a secondary school principal.

Teachers who are currently working as principals do not have Master's degrees, and Kuppet has asked the commission to confirm all deputies and principals who have been in acting posts.

Mr. Misori said most of those teachers in acting capacity are in Narok, Kajiado, Coast, and Northern Kenya and Turkana regions.

"Any promotion procedure which denies such teachers of their deserved positions are clearly unacceptable," said Mr. Misori.

Kuppet Chairman Omboko Milemba also expressed his opposition to the requirement, saying a degree is enough for a teacher to be promoted to a principal position.
