Published on September 12, 2019, Beatrice Chepkoech, the world 3000m steeplechase record holder, will lead a strong Kenyan team to the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, on September 27 – October 8.
Chepkoech secured her spot in the team by winning the IAAF Diamond League, earning a fourth-placed athlete a slot in the team. Fancy Cherono, who ranked fourth in 9:50.11, will join Chepkoech, Hyvin Kiyeng, and Celliphine Chespol in Doha as they aim to reclaim the gold medal Kenya missed in the previous edition held in London in 2017.
Speaking after the national trials held at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Chepkoech expressed her team's readiness to work together to achieve their goal. 'We are ready to work as a team that is why you saw us hold our hands together when we approached the finish line. This team is good because all of us have been in top five in major competitions this year,' Chepkoech said.
Hyvin Kiyeng, who won bronze in 2017, echoed Chepkoech's sentiments, saying, 'If we work together as a team I know we will bring the medals home. However, we also have to be careful since it Championships is always tricky.'
