On November 7th, Kibra residents will head to the polls to elect a new Member of Parliament, with 23 candidates cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to contest the seat.

According to IEBC, 16 candidates will run under various political parties, while seven will contest as independent candidates.

IEBC had initially received 30 applications, but seven candidates were either disqualified or failed to turn up for clearance on Tuesday.

Among those disqualified was Jubilee Party candidate McDonald Mariga, who was barred from running after IEBC failed to find his name in the 2017 voters' register.

Mariga can, however, file an appeal.

Other cleared candidates include Eliud Owalo of Amani National Congress (ANC) and Eng. Khamisi Butichi of Ford Kenya party.

The Kibra parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of former Member of Parliament Ken Okoth, who succumbed to cancer on July 26th while undergoing treatment in Nairobi Hospital.
