Kenya has emerged as a leader in digital economy, surpassing other African countries in terms of digitization. According to a 2019 report by the African Leapfrog Index (ALI), Kenya was one of six key drivers of the digital economy in Africa.
With over 80% internet reach, Kenya has the potential for even greater growth. The country has experienced the greatest amount of digital change over the past decade, outpacing other African countries.
As noted by the researchers, 'Kenya's potential to leapfrog will benefit from leveraging this digital change to nurture jobs in the digital economy, such as online freelance, ridesharing, and in e-commerce.'
The report aims to help countries across Africa optimize their digital evolutions to accelerate economic development. The six countries studied were selected based on their size, economic growth, median age of residents, quality of governance, and digital momentum.
Kenya's success in digitization is a testament to its growing economy and potential for future growth. As the country continues to invest in digital technologies, it is likely to remain a leader in the region.
