Former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's body arrived in Harare on Wednesday, marking the beginning of a week-long mourning period.

According to the Mugabe family, the late president will be laid to rest at his home in Katuma, not at the National Heroes Acre in Harare as previously planned.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa received Mugabe's body at the national airport in Harare, accompanied by a convoy of officials and military personnel.

"We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will," Mnangagwa told mourners at the airport. "Taunganidzwa pano kuti titambire our founding father of our nation. The entire nation is grieving. Let's all come in our numbers as we lay our founding father to rest on Sunday," he added.

Widow Grace Mugabe, dressed in a heavy black veil, sat beside Mnangagwa during the ceremony.

Mnangagwa's presence at the airport was notable, given his role in leading a coup that ousted Mugabe from power in 2017.
