On September 12, 2019, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings were announced, showcasing the world's top universities. The list, a benchmark for academic excellence, has been a subject of interest for many, particularly in Africa.

While Ivy League schools and the University of Oxford retained its position as the number one school, the top 10 list did not feature any African institution. However, this does not mean that Africa lacks quality universities.

After reviewing various African universities, a list of the top 10 institutions was compiled. The question remains, how do Kenyan universities fare in this ranking?

Unfortunately, no Kenyan university made the top 10 cut. The top 10 African universities are:

  • University of Cape Town (South Africa)
  • University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa)
  • Stellenbosch University (South Africa)
  • University of Kwazulu-Natal (South Africa)
  • Makerere University (Uganda)
  • American University in Cairo (Egypt)
  • Beni Suef University (Egypt)
  • Covenant University (Nigeria)
  • University of Ibadan (Nigeria)
  • University of Johannesburg (South Africa)

Kenyan universities will have to continue striving for excellence to join the ranks of Africa's top institutions.
