On September 12, 2019, Chuka University Vice Chancellor Erastus Njoka addressed the orientation of 5,000 freshers, cautioning them against 'hostel marriages' and drug abuse.
Prof Njoka emphasized the importance of adhering to the institution's rules and regulations to excel academically, noting that 3,500 students were admitted under the Joint Admission Board and 1,500 were self-sponsored.
He warned that girls who are cheated into marriages while in university often end up giving birth and discontinuing their education to undertake parental responsibilities.
Prof Njoka also cautioned against indulging in sexual intercourse, stating that many people take advantage of students' naivety and they end up contracting diseases.
He appealed to locals to coexist peacefully with the learners and take advantage of the over 16,000 student population for their economic growth.
Furthermore, the VC advised students from the county who did not manage to score a university grade to join technical institutes for technical courses, which he said are crucial in developing a nation.
