On September 12, 2019, Kenya's Cabinet made a significant decision to ban the adoption of children by foreign nationals.
The ban was announced during a special Cabinet meeting at State House, Nairobi, chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta and attended by Deputy President William Ruto.
The Cabinet also directed the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection to formulate a new policy document to regulate the adoption of children by foreign nationals in Kenya.
Additionally, the Ministry was tasked with streamlining the operations of the Child Welfare Society of Kenya and children's homes across the country.
Separately, the Cabinet approved Kshs 6.9 billion for infrastructure development in the Naivasha Special Economic Zone, including an Inland Container Depot and a Railway Marshalling Yard.
The Cabinet also gave the green light for Kenya to host the upcoming Nairobi Summit of the 25th International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD 25).
