The International Court of Justice has announced the closure date for the public hearings of the Kenya-Somalia maritime dispute, set to end on November 8, 2019.
Published on September 12, 2019, the Hague-based court initially scheduled the hearings for September 9 to September 14, but later rescheduled them to November 4 to 8, 2019, following Kenya's request to recruit a new legal defence team.
According to the ICJ, the hearings will take place at the Peace Palace in The Hague, with Somalia presenting its case on November 4, followed by Kenya's response on November 6, and the two sides resuming presentations on November 7 and 8.
Kenya has less than 50 days to recruit a new team that will take on Somalia during the public hearings, with its current team consisting of Prof Payam Akhavan, Prof Vaughan Lowe QC, Prof Alan Boyle, Prof Mathias Forteau, Mr Karim Khan, and Ms Amy Sanders.
"The hearings in this case have been rescheduled further to the request made by the Republic of Kenya on 3 September 2019 and taking into account the views expressed by the Federal Republic of Somalia on that request," the ICJ added in a statement.
