Garissa County has seen a worrying rise in new HIV infections among young people, with the National Aids Control Council (NACC) sounding the alarm.

According to Garissa regional coordinator Wario Boru, the growing threat can be attributed to a lack of parental guidance, which has led to a lack of sexual health knowledge among young people.

Speaking at a HIV and Aids Tribunal workshop in Garissa, Boru noted that the county's prevalence estimates of 2018 stood at 0.8%, meaning one in 125 people live with HIV.

North Eastern is considered the region with the highest percentage of HIV stigma in the country, largely due to socio-cultural factors.
