On September 9, 2019, a terror suspect was shot and injured in a police raid in Mombasa County, Kenya. The suspect, identified as Salim Aboud Khalid alias Survivor, was taken to hospital under police custody.
According to Mombasa divisional police commander Eliud Monari, the suspect attempted to attack police with a knife after being flushed out of his hiding place. Police shot him in the arm and leg to immobilize him, and he was then taken to Coast Provincial General Hospital.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with at least 17 police officers arriving at the hideout in four vehicles. The officers divided themselves into three groups and asked residents to stay indoors. Sounds of gunshots echoed through the usually quiet neighborhood for close to 20 minutes from about 6am.
"They did not shoot to kill. The first person escaped," said a resident who wished to remain anonymous. However, Mr. Monari clarified that they arrested their target and were unaware of another suspect.
Another resident corroborated the police account, stating, "They asked several times for the person to surrender before shooting."
