On September 12, 2019, Kenya and South Africa took a significant step towards strengthening their educational ties by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate technical exchanges on education between the two countries.

According to the MoU, Kenya's Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof. George Magoha, and South Africa's Minister of Basic Education, Mrs. Angelina Matsie Motshekga, agreed to develop a framework for introducing the teaching of Kiswahili in the South African Educational system.

The framework, which is currently being developed, aims to provide exchanges on other important issues related to the improvement of quality basic education in both countries.

Study visits, workshops, and the exchange of information will form the basis of technical exchanges between the two countries, focusing on areas such as digital learning, quality assurance and assessment, education information management systems, and special and inclusive education.

South Africa's Minister of Basic Education, Mrs. Angelina Matsie Motshekga, noted that about 40 percent of learners in South Africa speak Kiswahili, making it a viable option for learners to take up as an optional language besides French and Portuguese.
