On September 11, 2019, Kenya welcomed the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM) World Summit in Mombasa, marking the first time an African country has hosted the event. The summit brought together over 600 practitioners and experts from more than 20 countries, including all procurement officers from both counties and national governments.

The summit was opened by Acting National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani, with IFPSM President He Liming in attendance. The event was hosted by the Kenya Institute of Supplies Management, a member of the IFPSM, under the theme of sustainable procurement.

According to KISM Chairman Chris Oanda, the summit aimed to explore how procurement decisions can serve economic and environmental interests. Oanda noted that the event had been enthusiastically owned and embraced by Kenyan supply chain and procurement practitioners, who had turned up in large numbers to host international and regional delegates.

With over 130 international delegates, the summit offered an opportunity for Kenya to market itself as a tourist investment destination, in addition to being a procurement summit. The National Treasury had permitted all its procurement personnel to attend the summit, with about 500 Kenyan procurement personnel in attendance, mostly from national and county governments.

IFPSM President He Liming emphasized the global body's mandate to influence standards for practice, education, and development of knowledge resources for professionals worldwide. Currently, IFPSM has 45 member countries, with most of them in Europe and Asia, although its membership is rising within Africa.
