On September 11, 2019, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) steering committee took a decisive step to address the ongoing leadership crisis within the union.

Chairing the committee was Knut national chairman Wickliffe Omucheyi, who announced that Wilson Sossion was no longer the secretary-general of the union.

According to Omucheyi, the union would not be run by courts, but rather by its constitution. He emphasized that the only person who could speak for the union was Hesbon Otieno, who had been appointed by the National Executive Council (NEC).

Speaking at the Knut headquarters, national treasurer John Matiang'i reinforced the committee's stance, stating that Sossion was suspended and no longer leading the union.

He also clarified that the national steering committee was ready to fight for Knut's interests, even if it meant going against those who were spreading propaganda.

Meanwhile, the newly appointed Secretary General, Hesbon Otieno, expressed the union's focus on addressing teacher issues, particularly the dismissal of 42 teachers who had participated in the April new curriculum training.
