Published on September 11, 2019, a controversy emerged between Governor Anne Waiguru and blogger Dennis Itumbi over the Punguza Mzigo bill.

According to Itumbi, Waiguru had misled the public by claiming that the Kirinyaga County Assembly had rejected the bill.

Itumbi stated that the bill had not been debated in the assembly because there was no one to propose it.

Waiguru had claimed that the assembly had rejected the bill, but Itumbi disputed this, saying that the assembly's records showed that the bill had been withdrawn due to lack of a proposer, not because it was rejected.

Itumbi's criticism of Waiguru came after the assembly's decision was reported in the media on September 10, 2019.

Waiguru has been a strong supporter of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), which has been endorsed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
