On September 5, 2019, a daring heist occurred at the Standard Chartered Bank in Nairobi West, with thieves making off with 75 million shillings.
Fast forward to September 11, 2019, six suspects, including three police officers, were arraigned in court over the heist.
Chris Machogu, Duncan Kaveshi Luvuga, Boniface Mutua, Vincent Owuor, Alex Mutuku, and Francis Muriuki were charged with robbery with violence, but denied the charges.
After spending five days behind bars, the suspects were released on a bond of 1 million shillings each with two sureties of a similar amount.
The court's decision came a day after it ruled that the prosecution should cease detaining suspects without solid evidence, as this violates their right to liberty as enshrined in the constitution.
Meanwhile, former presidential candidate Cyrus Jirongo got a reprieve after the court returned his passport, which he had surrendered pending investigations into a 50 million shillings fraud dating back 25 years.
