The Kenya National Para-volley team is facing a financial crisis ahead of a crucial tournament in Rwanda, with the team's officials alleging neglect by the Ministry of Sports.
According to sources, the team needs Sh 9.4 million to honour the tournament, which doubles up as a Paralympic qualifier. However, the team was told to carry forward the trip and wait for another tournament in Morocco slated for January 2020.
Published on September 11, 2019, the team's officials claim that the Ministry of Sports has failed to release the necessary funds, leaving the team in a precarious situation.
Senator Gertrude Musuruve, who represents the team, has accused the Sports Commissioner, Japson Gitonga, of being rude and dismissive when she inquired about the situation.
“Gitonga treated me with a lot of disrespect. I wanted to find out what is the position of the para volleyball team but he said he cannot answer me because he is not allowed to talk to strangers,” Musuruve charged.
The team's chairman, Polycarp Mbeya, has warned that failure to participate in the Rwanda tournament might result in a ban from the World Para Volley governing body, which could lead to a fine and a ban from competing for 3 to 4 years.
