Established under the National Insurance Fund Act of 1998, the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is a state corporation mandated to facilitate access to quality healthcare for all Kenyan residents.

As of 2019, NHIF's SUPA Cover is Kenya's largest, reliable, and affordable medical insurance cover, enabling members and their families to enjoy an unparalleled benefit package.

The SUPA Cover costs Kshs. 500 per month for the principal members and beneficiaries.

What Does SUPA Cover Entail?

Outpatient care cover includes preventive and curative services, such as consultation, laboratory investigations, drugs administration and dispensing, daycare procedures, radiological examinations, health education, wellness and counselling, physiotherapy services, and immunization.

In-patient cover includes hospital stay with healthcare diagnosis, procedure, and treatment, offered on a comprehensive care basis at contracted facilities.

Maternity and child health care cover caters for pregnancy-related health services, including ante-natal care, midwifery services, delivery through normal delivery or caesarian section, and post-natal care, as well as newborn care, vaccinations, and breastfeeding advice up to 6 weeks after delivery.

Renal dialysis and kidney transplant package includes care for prescribed renal conditions through dialysis as an intervention and other related treatment.

Overseas treatment for specialized surgeries not available locally is also covered, subject to pre-authorization by NHIF, which includes travel costs and emergency treatment incurred while temporarily outside the country on official duty.

Additionally, road ambulance services are available for emergency cases, and most services are offered comprehensively at contracted hospitals, subject to pre-authorization by NHIF.

NHIF offers 24-hour assistance through its customer care centre, contactable at 0800720601 or via email.
