Published on September 11, 2019, a Nanyuki court has granted a reprieve to Tabitha Karanja, CEO of Keroche Breweries, by striking her name from a charge sheet.
The charge sheet, initially filed on September 30, 2015, accused Karanja, her company, and a Nanyuki-based beer distributor, Grace Wanjiru, of infringing on beer packaging by a rival firm.
Principal Magistrate Njeri Thuku granted an application by special prosecutor John Maina to amend the charge sheet and expunge Karanja's name as the second accused person.
‘Having considered the application by the prosecution, I hereby grant the request to strike out accused two in this matter and charge accused one and three afresh,’ the magistrate said.
Lawyer Ibrahim Sanko, appearing for Keroche Breweries, did not object to the amendment, stating it would have been in bad taste to charge Karanja as a company CEO and also charge the company at the same time.
