On Tuesday, police in Busia made a surprising arrest, detaining three of their own colleagues while in possession of fake currencies.

The officers, including Bungoma Central Sub County Criminal Investigations Officer Joseph Kahindi, a superintendent of police, were on a mission to 'clean' the fake money when they were intercepted after a tip-off.

According to a police statement, the officers were carrying $41,500 in fake US dollars and Sh2,000 in fake Kenyan currency, which they had recovered from their pockets.

Interestingly, the two junior officers were armed at the time of the incident, but the DCIO, Kahindi, did not have a weapon.

This incident comes on the heels of a similar case in Nairobi last week, where police launched investigations into the discovery of millions of fake foreign currency dumped by the roadside along Ngong Road.

Police in Nairobi had reported that a box containing fake US dollars and Euros was abandoned near Coptic Hospital by unknown people, with the money in different stages of manufacturing.

It is worth noting that the police in Busia were alerted to the incident after members of the public spotted some of the fake cash splashed by the roadside.
