Published on September 11, 2019, a fundraiser event held by Gor Mahia in Nairobi on Tuesday night raised a paltry Sh300,000 in cash and Sh1 million in pledges, falling far short of the club's target of Sh5 million.

Club chairman Ambrose Rachier expressed his concerns about the club's financial situation, stating, 'The fundraiser was given a wide berth and most of those we had invited didn’t show up. Even the guest of honour didn’t come. We are in a very bad situation.'

The club's financial woes have been exacerbated by the withdrawal of funding by sponsor SportPesa last month. Former Kenyan international McDonald Mariga, who had indicated his intention to attend the fundraiser, also failed to show up.

With the Kenyan champions set to travel to Algeria to play USM Algers in a Caf Africa Champions League assignment on Sunday, Rachier will be hoping for government intervention to provide return air tickets for the team.
