On September 11, 2019, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) made a decision that would change the course of the Kibra Constituency by-election. They annulled the candidature of footballer McDonald Mariga, leaving many wondering what would happen next.

Just a day after the IEBC's decision, Mariga took action. He filed a petition with the IEBC Dispute Resolution Committee, challenging the decision to bar him from the election.

Mariga's representatives claim that he was registered as a voter in Starehe Constituency sometime this year, and that the incident was caused by an administrative error by the elections body.

According to Mariga's team, if the Jubilee Party is not satisfied with the decision of the IEBC committee, they are free to pursue the matter in a court of law.
